Lok Adalats and Nyaya Panchayats

Lok adalats are not judicial bodies. They were set u in towns and cities to bring in settlements of disputes though agreements of parties and to reduce the volume of judicial work.

After the passage of the consumer protection act, 1986, a consumer dispute redressal commission was set up 1955. It has branches in almost in every district of the country. This is a quasi-judicial authority headed by the minister of consumer affairs at the Union and the state levels.

There are nyaya panchayats (village courts) in some states for securing inexpensive justice in rural India through 73rd amendment is silent on it.
